We mentioned earlier in our “Network” section about the server and network security we have in place with keycard entry, video monitoring and rock solid staff monitoring online threats and updating server security. So this leaves one other area of protection that MUST be filled. That is webmaster hosting accounts and password protected areas.
Your Hosting Account:
We host thousands of domain names with hundreds of hosting clients
uploading, changing, modifying and FTP’ing into their accounts daily. It is simply impossible for
ANY host to monitor what each client is uploads to their account, with regards to it being secure
from hacking. We must therefore rely on clients to take some responsibility in ensuring
their hosting account is protected against vulnerable security holes.
Scripts – This is the number one choice for hackers to gain entry into a website. Only upload varified, reputable scripts, ensure you have the latest patches, releases, bug fixes and check back regularly with the vendor of the script for security update releases. Review your hosting account periodically checking for any suspicious .cgi or .pl scripts that may have appeared and delete all old, unused scripts.
FTP – Be sure to change your FTP password on a regular basis and do not release your FTP username and/or password to anyone. If you need to have a technician or someone go into your account, do not give them your usual user/pass, we will be glad to set you up with an additional temporary user/pass for the person to gain access, we can even limit it to only the directory that needs to be accessed.
Password Trading – A fairly large problem for all webmasters, it is annoying and wrong but generally not malicious as a major threat to your hosting account. However, does cost webmasters in terms of time and extra bandwidth charges.
